The Connection between Diet and Dog Behaviour

Add to favourites

Feeding our dogs with a species-appropriate diet made from natural ingredients is very important for both their physical health and behaviour, i.e. the psyche. A dog that feels completely comfortable will have a balanced disposition. They are alert and interested but not overexcited. This shows harmony between alternating active and resting behaviour. A dog that can be inspired but also brought to rest.

What influences the dog's behaviour?

Of course there are many factors, their upbringing, the living environment and the previous good and bad life experiences play a major role in the animal's behaviour. In addition, other things can also lead to behavioural problems in dogs - ranging from genetics, possible overbreeding, overvaccinations and environmental factors, to the side effects of medications. Antibiotics and chemical deworming treatments can have an unfavourable effect on the vital beneficial bacteria of the intestinal flora. This can disturb the balance and their well-being as a whole in the long term. As owners, we cannot keep everything potentially harmful away from our four-legged buddies. But we can strengthen them by avoiding unnecessary chemicals and at the same time feeding them healthily with natural food. In this way, we have provided a positive influence on the dog's behaviour.

Dogs with behavioural problems - does food play a role?

Incorrect feeding has a negative impact on the dog's behaviour and well-being, but you don't always see that right away. A relatively healthy body can compensate for the deficits and cope with the synthetic substances from a conventional industrial feed for some time. As the dog gets older or if an illness is added, the consequences of incorrect feeding through behavioural problems will then become apparent.

How does food cause behavioural problems in dogs?

Since industrialisation, dog and cat food has often been made with low-quality waste and by-products from human production with many flavourings, colourings and preservatives to create a respectable food pulp. This is then available in dry and wet food variants, further supplemented with synthetic additives and vitamins. The dog owner is given the impression that these foods provide the dog with good all-round care. However, waste products such as feathers, claws and horns of animals as well as husks and roots of grains are not nutritious, meaty food materials. They do not promote good muscles and do not constantly provide energy with which a dog could supply its brain activity. On the contrary - the quickly digested sugars from e.g. beet pulp or grain residues provides an explosive energy to the body, which quickly drops off again.

Healthy food – healthy dog! This is how nutrition can help.

Neurotoxic substances, such as those contained in synthetic substances, can lead to nervousness. Dogs cannot defend themselves against it, because they accumulate more and more through daily feeding and treats. These neurotoxins are deposited in the tissues. At some point, the body's detoxification mechanisms are exhausted, and slagging and acidification occur. Physical irritation and also behavioural problems are often the result. The dog becomes sluggish or overexcited, cannot concentrate or is even aggressive. They can't relax, because their focus is always on itchy skin or an aching stomach.

Physically, allergies, weight and joint problems, tumours, skin and digestive problems can also become noticeable over time. The dog itself will not feel comfortable with this either, so behavioural problems can begin. Then, if it is recommended to feed a special commercially available diet food against these signs, a vicious circle begins. Special diet foods often contain even more low-quality ingredients and synthetics that are supposed to "get rid of" a symptom without looking for the cause. In order to compensate for these irritations in the body and the behavioural problems in dogs, it is not recommended to use more unnatural substances, but to take a step back to nature - with appropriate food and genuine ingredients.

Bad behaviour of the dog due to the food?

So, it's worth taking a look at the contents and composition of the food. Make sure that you find real ingredients and correspondingly no chemically modified ingredients or additives on the food label. There are major differences in the production and quality of dog food. Only real ingredients such as meat and offal, vegetables, fruits and herbs, but also whole grain carbohydrates can be a source of nutrients. If these are carefully prepared and no synthetics are used, you get a natural, species-appropriate food. Because if we orient ourselves to the ancestors of dogs, there is no protein-reduced or fat-reduced prey animal to be found in their diet plan. Also various diseases of civilization only appeared when the food industry made it to the dog bowl.

Positive support for behaviour – with Canis Plus®

Only when the dog is again fed naturally can it develop its full strength. This results in a healthy look, with a shiny coat, a muscular body, clean ears, strong nerves and calm behaviour. In this way, our natural, species-appropriate Canis Plus® food can positively support behavioural problems in dogs, in addition to training, and accompany them back in the right direction.

You should consider individually whether the dog needs BARF, wet food or dry food. The diet must suit the dog and its requirements. A cosy family dog should not get excess amounts of protein, because it could develop unpleasant behaviours such as hyper nervousness, lack of concentration and even aggression as well as insecurity due to the excess of energy. If a moderate but high-quality protein content is fed, you can help the dog to correct any misbehaviour.

An excess of protein can promote misbehaviour. This means that the owner should use large chews sparingly, because these also provide proteins that can make an already overexcited dog even more exuberant.

Stress can cause diarrhoea

Behavioural insecurities and problems in dogs can manifest themselves in different ways. Some signs are very obvious, such as aggressive behaviour on a leash. Other signs, however, are not necessarily associated with behavioural problems. If a dog constantly defecates softly and causes such as parasites, allergies or intolerances are ruled out, it is worth taking a closer look at the dog's behaviour when you are outside. If the dog reacts very agitated or even stressed in this situation, then this may be the reason why they have problems with soft poo.

So, watch out for signs such as stress panting, trembling, increased salivation or mouth licking, as well as the indication of appeasement signals, such as a retracted tail. If your dog shows you these signals, he is probably stressed. Together with an experienced dog trainer, you can find out what is causing the stress and also what training methods you can use to help your dog in these situations.

You can also give support through feeding. We humans know it - stress hits us in the stomach and unfortunately it can be the same for our dogs. It may be that your dog shows more and more signs of hyperacidity, e.g. by smacking, salivating or burping more often. In addition, irritation of the stomach lining can occur. Many dogs would then prefer to eat grass in the morning before they would start eating. In these situations, feeding Canis Extra Mineral Moor and Canis Extra Ceolife® can  help. They are fed for 2-4 weeks, in separate meals. The dog is given Mineral Moor throughout the day, which you can divide into different meals or feed in one meal. Ceolife® is then served late in the evening, in a small extra meal.

Feeding natural food for the balance our dogs: Goodbye stress

After switching to a truly natural food, you can often observe the following: The dogs become calmer and more relaxed. They then have the strength and concentration for walks or training tasks without burning up their energy right at the beginning. Sometimes even very insecure dogs are less nervous and agitated. A stronger nervous system can make a positive contribution to calm behaviour and possibly reduce stress by avoiding neurotoxic substances in the food. It is to be expected that abnormal behaviours can be significantly corrected in combination with the right education and natural food to bring joy and serenity back to the dog, and ultimately also to the owners. Harmony between animal and owner is achieved through the dog food, which can prevent stress and help calm down. Here, the dog owner is in the fortunate position of having a direct influence on the health of the animal through good quality food. A species-appropriate, wholesome diet is the right way to go.

Naturavetal® Tip: Inner Peace – with Canis Extra Tranquil Pet

A prolonged inner tension is usually a hindrance when trying to teach dogs a new behaviour pattern. If the dog is very unfocused, overexcited or even insecure, this can lead to leash aggression or other undesirable behaviours. Here it is very important to help the dog to find its inner peace again. This can be achieved with consistent education in a stable environment. A qualified dog trainer can accompany humans and dogs on this path.

In addition, you can also support your dog nutritionally. Our Canis Extra Tranquil Pet is a natural food supplement in capsule form. You can easily feed Tranquil Pet for a wide variety of stress-related behavioural problems, whether short or long-term. It consists of natural building blocks and supports the normal functioning of the nervous system. Calm and balance can be promoted, which can help the dog to cope with stressful situations more easily. Anxiety-related upsets caused by bad experiences or abuse can also be alleviated. In very nervous dogs that find it difficult to rest, it can promote concentration, which can make it easier to start training.

Canis Extra Tranquil Pet

Promotes inner peace and concentration, to help dogs who suffer from inner tension find an easier start to training.
