Feeding recommendationand recommendedsupplements when feeding pure meatfor dogs

The Canis Plus® pure meat variations are not complete meals but must be supplemented with side dishes if they are eaten regularly.

In this case, the meat portion of the meal should be 70%, and supplemented with 30% of colorful vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well as a source of calcium and oil. This is how you create a nutritional species-appropriate complete meal for your dog. This ratio of 70% to 30% is a healthy ratio for our four-legged friends. This may differ with dogs suffering from medical conditions. Should this be the case, please contact our team of experts for advice.

This may vary if there is an illness to consider, our team of experts will be happy to help you with individual advice. Our tables show you the proportion of our air-dried flakes to be supplemented, the amount of fresh vegetables and fruit you should add is not shown here. In our guide article "First steps to BARF" we show you how to calculate them yourself.

FAQ: The most important questions and answers about feeding dogs pure meat

What is pure meat exactly?

By pure meat we mean pure muscle meat and offal, without any synthetic additives. Our Canis Plus® pure meat pots and meat rolls consist exclusively of muscle meat and offal such as lungs, liver, heart, trachea and oesophagus as well as meat broth - always from a single animal protein source such as chicken, goat or horse.

Should dogs eat raw or cooked meat?

Dogs can eat both raw and cooked meat. With raw meat, you can get particularly close to the natural diet of its ancestors, the wolf. In the wild, the wolf would eat its prey including the skin, fur, offal, bones and stomach contents. BARF feeders therefore prefer feeding with pure raw meat. Having lived with humans for thousands of years the dog has become domesticated and has been accustomed to a mixed diet and can tolerate cooked meat without any problems. We make sure that our meat is cooked very gently.

Can you feed a dog only meat?

A dog needs more than just meat. It is often said that the dog is a carnivore, but this is not entirely true. Unlike the cat, a dog is not a pure carnivore, but rather an omnivore. For a healthy and species-appropriate diet, our four-legged friend needs not only pure meat, consisting of muscle meat and offal, but also herbs, fruit and vegetables and a source of calcium.

How much meat does a dog need per day?

There isn’t a general answer to this question, as it always depends on the individual animal. For their healthy development, young dogs would need a different diet than an older dog who no longer moves much and may even have a medical conditions. Age and temperament have a great influence on the right amount to feed. There fore, pure meat for a species-appropriate diet is necessary for a healthy regime. The values in the tables on this page serve as a guide. For more information, our team of experts will be happy to assist you.

What needs to be added to the pure meat pots and meat rolls?

The Canis Plus® pure meat variations are not ready-made complete meals. They should be served with side dishes if they are regularly fed as the main food. In this case, the meat content of the meal should be 70% meat supplemented with 30% colorful vegetables, fruits or flakes and herbs, as well as a source of calcium and oil. This is how you create a species-appropriate complete meal for your dog. If there is any illness to consider, the recommendation may differ, our team of experts will be happy to help you with individual advice.

Are bones also processed in the pure meat products?

More and more dogs react to bones with stomach upsets such as heartburn, hyperacidity and similar problems, especially in old age. We prepare our Canis Plus® pure meat variations free of bones. So they are optimally tolerated by every dog, whether young or old. However, this means that you need to supplement the calcium source if you want to feed the pure meat pots or meat rolls regularly. You can choose a natural source of calcium that your dog tolerates best. Canis Extra Organic Eggshell Powder and Canis Extra Calcified Seaweed are considered to be particularly well-tolerated, natural sources of calcium.
